Exploring Nadi Shodhana: Strength, Space and Possibility with Stacy Ingham

  • Ashtanga Yoga School Raleigh 302 Pebble Creek Dr. Cary, NC 27511 United States (map)

I am excited to welcome my teacher Stacy Ingham for a special weekend workshop of exploration, study and community. Stacy’s knowledge, clarity in teaching and devotion to the practice continues to shape and inspire my own journey. I am honored to share her guidance with our community in this weekend workshop as we explore the Second Series of Ashtanga yoga. The Second Series is complementary to the Primary Series in many ways, allowing students to explore more deeply in a variety of postures that challenge the body, mind, and nervous system, bringing balance, strength and stamina.

You do not need to be practicing Second Series to attend. We will discuss and explore the connections between Primary and Second Series, and explore the key actions, energetics and intentions of postures in each category (forward folds, backbends, and arm balances).

Mysore practice sessions each day are an opportunity to put new ideas into play on your mat.

Friday May 1st

Mysore + pranayama | 8-10:30am

Building a Bridge to Second Series | 5:30-7pm

The Primary and Second Series of Ashtanga yoga provide what many consider a “balanced daily diet” of yoga practice. In this session we’ll discuss the structure and energetics of the two sequences, how they fit together, and how to incorporate the second series into your practice. We’ll end the session with a short practice, making a connection between some of the primary and second series postures.

Saturday May 2nd

Mysore + Pranayama/talk | 8-10:30am

Backbending for All Levels | 12:30-2:30pm

Bending backward is challenging for many people, but there are great benefits to learning to move the spine in this way. The backbending postures at the beginning of Second Series can be a very helpful way to prepare the body physically and energetically for more advanced and complicated asana. In this session we’ll discuss the energetics of backbending in general, and see a progression from the most foundational backbends in Ashtanga to the most advanced, offering strategies for any level to approach this challenging category of postures.

Sunday May 3rd

Mysore + Pranayama/talk | 8-10:30am

Stability and Balance | 12:30-2:30pm

The second half of Second Series is a combination of deep forward folding and arm balances. These postures balance out the body physically and energetically after the deep backbends earlier in the series. In this session we’ll look at Leg Behind Head postures and their preparations, as well as a few of the Arm Balances and how to begin to support our weight in our hands. We will work through progressions for these postures, so any level is welcome as we develop strategies to incorporate these powerful postures into practice.
