Getting Started:
Creating a positive learning experience:
The mutually dedicated relationship between you and your teacher is essential to a positive learning experience and a safe practice. Your teacher will help guide you on what and how to practice. Communicate any relevant injuries, health conditions, or individual needs with your teacher prior to each practice. Work within your limits and commit to a regular practice to yield a beneficial, growing, and sustainable experience.
Personal hygiene
Personal hygiene is important. We’re sharing a small space together, and it gets hot and sweaty! Please ensure that you and your gear are clean. Please try to refrain from scented toiletries that may disturb others and lotions and oils applied prior to practice can cause your arms and hands to slip.. Make sure to clean your practice area when you are finished and return props/mats to their proper location.
Phones + Personal Items
Please silence/turn off your phone and refrain from unnecessary talking during class. Make sure to leave all personal items in the cubby area in the downstairs or when you first walk in the shala. Any valuables should be locked in your vehicle or left at home.
Water
We recommend you don’t drink water during class. We’re trying to build our heat during practice. Make sure to drink plenty of water afterward and throughout your day.
Common Questions:
Do I need to know the sequence before coming to Mysore?
Absolutely not!!
Mysore classes are designed to work for any level of practitioner. Our specific method for teaching Mysore style Ashtanga ensures that everyone- regardless of experience level, age or ability - can walk in and start their yoga practice.
What can expect my first time?
You are welcome to arrive anytime during the Mysore time on the schedule and teacher will be there to greet you and get you set up. Your first class will last between 25-45 minutes and you will be taught the warm-ups (Sun Salutations A+B) and a couple of additional posture as well as the last three closing postures.. From there you will take rest (or a nap - it happens!) and afterward, the teacher will give you more information and guidance on when to come back as well as answer any additional questions that you might have.
Am I practicing for 2-3 hours?!
Nope!!!!
Mysore style classes are really just an open chunk of time where practitioners are welcome to come in and do their practice. Your practice will start out somewhere between 20-45mins for the first few sessions and gradually increase in length as you spend more time learning the sequence, gaining strength and flexibility.
But I’m not flexible or strong……
This is a perfect reason to start a yoga practice. Yoga is for all people, and one of the many benefits of a regular and consistent practice is increased flexibility and strength which can lead to less pain, more mobility and increased health throughout the body.
